This collection of photos was taken by a group of dedicated volunteers across the US during the Aug 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. They have been algorithmically stitched together, based on the time and location of the photo, to give us an extended look at the sun’s atmosphere. Where we have gaps you’ll see the previous image shown for a longer period. As more images are uploaded and processed these will be filled in and the movie will get better and better.

For most viewers, the Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse will last less than two and half minutes. But for one team of NASA-funded scientists, the eclipse will last over seven minutes. Their secret? Following the shadow of the Moon in two retrofitted WB-57F jet planes. Amir Caspi of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and his team will use two of NASA’s WB-57F research jets to chase the darkness across America on Aug. 21. Taking observations from twin telescopes mounted on the noses of the planes, Caspi will capture the clearest images of the Sun’s outer atmosphere — the corona — to date and the first-ever thermal images of Mercury, revealing how temperature varies across the planet’s surface.

Summary: I met with Manu Prakash from Stanford to talk about 2 of his labs’ inventions the Foldscope and the Paperfuge. Combined these cost only 68 cents and they can be used to diagnose Malaria. Both of these are examples not only of simple, brilliant design, but of how engineering is used to make a positive dent in the world.
